Special Educational Needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Glenwood Special School, Benfleet

About Me

I have been employed at Glenwood School for seven years and I am currently the Assistant Head Teacher. Prior to that I was Teacher in Charge of a Primary Pupil Referral Unit in South Ockendon Thurrock.

In my role as Assistant Head Teacher of Glenwood School I lead on Assessment for Learning, Teaching and Learning and Autism Spectrum Disorder. I have completed three modules at North Carolina University which have accumulated in a consultant qualification in T.E.A.C.C.H. I believe that good structured teaching is imperative for any learner who has difficulties with receptive and or expressive communication although T.E.A.C.C.H is primarily aimed at learners who have a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

I believe wholeheartedly in the principles of T.E.A.C.C.H and I am incredibly passionate about it. The core values are Teaching: sharing  knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and increase the skill level of others. Expanding: committed to expanding own knowledge and that of others. Appreciating: understand and appreciate the unique strengths of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Collaborating and Cooperating: A spirit of collaboration and cooperation in our interactions with colleagues, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Holistic: The importance of looking at the whole person and their families.

As a classroom practitioner I have consistently been graded as Outstanding since 2009.

I am driven to empower colleagues and impact on learner’s progress both in my school and in others. As a school we now have a clear consistent approach that is fully embedded. I have mentored and coached colleagues in local mainstream schools which has had a huge impact on them and practitioners and the learners they work with.
