NPQs

Working in partnership with the Harris Chafford Hundred TS Hub, and their NPQ provider, National Institute of Teaching (NIoT), we are signposting the National Professional Qualifications.

Applications are now being accepted for cohorts commencing October 2023.

From Autumn 2022, the organisations eligible to access scholarships for the National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) are:

  • state-funded schools
  • state-funded 16 to 19 organisations
  • independent special schools
  • virtual schools (local authority run organisations that support the education of children in care)
  • hospital schools not already included in other categories of eligible organisations
  • young offender institutions
  • Local authority employed supply teachers will also be able to access scholarships.

Teachers and leaders who are employed as above are eligible for training scholarships for the following NPQs:

  • NPQ for Leading Teaching (NPQLT)
  • NPQ for Leading Behaviour and Culture (NPQLBC)
  • NPQ for Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD)
  • NPQ for Leading Literacy (NPQLL)
  • NPQ for Senior Leadership (NPQSL)
  • NPQ for Headship (NPQH)
  • NPQ for Executive Leadership (NPQEL)
  • NPQ for Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL)

Access to funding remains conditional on successful validation of participants’ registration information against Teaching Regulation Agency records, so you must ensure that the information supplied to your NPQ provider matches your teacher record. You can check and update your record via the Teaching Regulation Agency’ Teacher Self-Service Portal.

Training scholarships for the NPQ for Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) are available to those leaders qualified to at least level 3 with a full and relevant qualifications who are, or are aspiring to be:

  • managers of private, voluntary and independent nurseries
  • headteachers of school-based or maintained nurseries
  • childminders with leadership responsibilities

And are employed:

  • in a maintained nursery school in England
  • in a pre-school class that’s part of a school in England
  • in a nursery that is registered on the Ofsted Early Years Register
  • as a childminder and registered on the Ofsted Early Years Register, or with a registered Childminder Agency

Each programme is a combination of self-study units, locally delivered in-person sessions, online masterclasses delivered by specialists, group coaching and virtual visits to a school.

> NPQLT – Leading Teaching 
For ambitious teachers who lead, or aspire to lead teaching in a subject, year group, key stage or phase. This programme will harness the NIoT’s leading research, putting it to immediate, practical use. Access the latest and best evidence of what works in education; apply this to sequencing your curriculum and planning for assessment in your own subject and context; build the expertise to manage a team of teachers; develop the skills to meet individual pupils’ needs.  Read more or apply >

> NPQLTD – Leading Teacher Development
For teachers who have, or want to have responsibility for leading the development of other teachers in their school. This includes anyone interested in mentoring trainees or Early-Career Teachers. This programme will harness the NIoT’s leading research, putting it to immediate, practical use. Access the latest and best evidence of what works in education; develop the skills to help staff plan lessons that meet pupils needs and encourage success, without creating unnecessary workload.  Read more or apply >

> NPQLBC – Leading Behaviour and Culture
For teachers and leaders, including behaviour-management leads and SENDCOs, who want to be involved in developing and implementing behaviour and wellbeing strategies at their school. Learn to create the conditions for good behaviour, and gain the confidence to support colleagues in the classroom. Spend time exploring the link between pupil wellbeing and behaviour. > NPQLL – Leading Literacy
For ambitious classroom teachers and middle leaders, who want to, or already have responsibility for leading literacy across a school, year group, key stage or phase. The NPQLL will provide access to cutting-edge research, developed by people who know what teachers need. Be supported in putting this into practice, design and implement literacy-improvement strategies; learn the best ways to support colleagues as they develop pupils’ reading, writing and wider understanding of language.  Read more or apply >

> NPQSL – Senior Leadership
For ambitious classroom teachers and leaders who want to be, or already are, senior leaders with cross-school responsibilities. You will; build your confidence in helping to implement your school’s strategic direction and establishing an environment where pupils can thrive and find fulfilment; have access to cutting-edge research, developed by people who know what teachers need; learn how to be an empathetic leader: to ensure that staff feel supported and valued, to communicate effectively with parents and carers, and to make school a safe, welcoming place for every pupil who attends.  Read more or apply >

> NPQSL – Early Years Leadership
For ambitious classroom teachers and leaders who are qualified to at least Level 3, with a full and relevant qualification, who want to be, or already are, managers of private, voluntary and independent nurseries, nursery headteachers or childminders with leadership responsibilities. The NPQEYL is designed to help early-years leaders plan and deliver a high-quality curriculum to support child development. It provides access to cutting-edge research, helping participants to build a teaching culture based on what works. It will cover language and literacy approaches, personal, social and emotional development and behaviour management; and, in a sector where there is rarely enough cash to go around, you will learn to prioritise, allocate and manage resources for long-term sustainability.

And are employed:

    • in a maintained nursery school in England
    • in a pre-school that is part of a school in England
    • in a nursery that is registered on the Ofsted Early Years Register

> NPQH – Headship
For ambitious school leaders who want to be, or already are a headteacher. The NPQH provides a bridge from successful senior leadership to headship. It will build participants’ confidence in the essential aspects of headship, such as leading curriculum and assessment, developing behaviour strategies and implementing school improvement. It will also remind them that effective leadership of a school, ultimately, is about people. They will learn how to be an empathetic, humane headteacher: to encourage and support members of staff, to communicate effectively with parents and carers, and to make school a safe, welcoming place for every pupil who attends.  Read more or apply >

Other NPQ Provision

We are also signposting the following programmes, but please note these are ran as national programmes and are likely to be held outside of this county, so travel will be required.

> NPQEL – Executive Leadership
For school leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, an executive headteacher or have a school trust CEO role with responsibility for leading several schools. The NPQEL will will provide specialist knowledge necessary for running a multi-school organisation. It will support participants in establishing systems and policies that work across all their  schools and in encouraging collaboration across their network. Executive leaders will learn to build a sustainable trust culture, develop policies that work across all schools, in areas such as assessment, behaviour and professional development. They will also also discuss governance and accountability, and the best methods for building a partnership with parents.  Read more or apply >

> NPQEHCO – Early Headship Coaching Offer
For those in their first 5 years of headship, who have EITHER completed the new/reformed NPQH before becoming a head OR those currently taking the existing NPQH.  Those teachers who are currently taking the existing NPQH will also be eligible for the NPQ EHCO (if they are in their first 5 years of headship).

The aim of the NPQ – EHCO Early Headship Coaching Offer (NPQ EHCO) is to provide structured, unassessed face-to-face support based on the best available evidence about what makes an effective head teacher.  Read more or apply >
